IMD Issues Nationwide Alert: Heatwave Continues in North, Heavy Rain & Thunderstorm Warning Across India

India is set to witness extreme weather conditions over the next two weeks, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of continued heatwave in parts of North and Central India alongside widespread rainfall and thunderstorms in several regions. The latest IMD press release dated 30 April 2026 highlights a sharp contrast in weather patterns across the country.

According to the report, severe heatwave conditions dominated North India last week, with temperatures rising significantly above normal levels. The highest temperature recorded in the plains reached 47.6°C in Banda, Uttar Pradesh, making it one of the hottest locations in the country.

At the same time, the eastern and northeastern regions experienced a surge in rainfall activity due to cyclonic circulations and atmospheric disturbances. Extremely heavy rainfall was recorded in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, while heavy to very heavy rainfall affected states like Assam, Meghalaya, and parts of Northeast India.

The IMD has also warned that this contrasting weather pattern will continue. In the coming days, Northwest India may see thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, especially in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, East and Northeast India are likely to receive widespread rainfall with chances of heavy to very heavy showers, raising concerns over waterlogging and localized flooding.

Central India, including Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, is expected to witness thunderstorms with gusty winds and possible hailstorm activity, while southern states such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, and Karnataka may experience moderate rainfall along with lightning and strong winds.

On the temperature front, IMD has indicated that heatwave conditions may persist in parts of Vidarbha and Rajasthan in early May, though a gradual fall in temperatures is expected in some northern regions after a few days.

Another important highlight from the report is the changing global climate signals. Weak La Niña conditions are transitioning towards neutral, and there is a possibility of El Niño developing during the upcoming southwest monsoon season, which could influence rainfall patterns across India.

IMD has advised citizens to remain cautious, especially in regions facing extreme heat or heavy rainfall. People are urged to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure, and follow local advisories during thunderstorms and lightning events.

With extreme heat in the north and heavy rainfall in other parts, India is entering a critical pre-monsoon phase, where rapid weather changes could impact daily life, agriculture, and travel across multiple states.
