The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a major nationwide weather update, warning of heatwave conditions across North and Central India for the next three days, while several eastern, northeastern, and southern states are likely to receive rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds during the coming week. The latest advisory dated 25 April 2026 highlights sharp temperature spikes in states like Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and parts of Madhya Pradesh.
According to IMD, the highest temperature recorded in the country was 45.2°C in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, showing how intense the heat has become across the northern plains. Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions were reported in Himachal Pradesh, while heatwave conditions also prevailed in Delhi, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, East Uttar Pradesh, and north Rajasthan. Warm night conditions have also been flagged in several areas, making relief difficult even after sunset.
North India Weather Update
For Delhi-NCR, IMD said temperatures are likely to remain between 42°C and 44°C with partly cloudy skies and heatwave conditions. However, there is also a possibility of thundery development and very light rain during afternoon or evening hours, which may bring temporary relief. From 28 April onward, stronger winds and light rain or drizzle are expected, with temperatures gradually easing.
In Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu-Kashmir, heatwave conditions are likely to continue till 27 April, after which temperatures may begin to fall by 2°C to 4°C due to changing weather systems.
Rain and Thunderstorm Warning
IMD has forecast fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Some areas may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, especially in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and northeastern states between 25 April and 1 May.
Thunderstorm activity is also expected over Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh on different dates this week. Isolated hailstorm activity has also been forecast for Jharkhand and North Interior Karnataka.

What to Expect Next
The weather pattern suggests India will continue to witness a sharp contrast this week — extreme heat in the north and central belt, while rain-bearing systems remain active in the east, northeast, and parts of the south. Residents in heatwave-affected regions are advised to stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure during peak afternoon hours.
People in rain-warning states should remain alert for lightning, strong winds, waterlogging, and travel disruptions. IMD has advised citizens to follow local weather bulletins and district-level warnings for the latest updates.
